What’s On Tap This Week @ Max Burger West Hartford

by Brian Mitchell, Corporate Beverage Director, Max Restaurant Group

beer-chico-floydsThis summer Sierra Nevada Brewing, one of (if not the) leading Craft Brewer in the United States, set out on a summer long tour and festival drive.  Taking their bus and brewing genius across the country, the folks for Sierra stopped over in Festivals from Californai to Maine.  Along the way they created and made a series of beers that are as unique and varied as any out there – all in conjunction with 12 other craft breweries.  You can read about this huge collaborative effort on the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp webpage by clicking here.

To celebrate this huge endeavor, Max Burger in West Hartford will be featuring a selection of these collaborative brews from the Beer Camp collection, starting today with the Sierra Nevada / Three Floyd’s Brewing Co. Chico King Pale Ale.

brewer-3flyds3 Floyds has a reputation as the Midwestern kings of alpha (hops). Chico King is a mash-up of a mutual passion between these breweries for hoppy pale ales, and combines a uniquely robust malt body with intense citrusy and fruity new school hop varietals.

3 Floyds marches to the beat of their own (double kick) drum when it comes to collaboration, often partnering with comic book artists, tattoo parlors or heavy metal bands when inspiration strikes. These eclectic beers are coveted throughout the Midwest and some beers, like the legendary Dark Lord Imperial Stout, have spawned something akin to a beer-themed holiday in the brewery’s hometown of Muenster, IN.

On tap today, come into Max Burger West Hartford to taste some of this very limited production beer.  We will be following this up with a selection later in the week, including other Beer Camp collaborative brews, such as:

Sierra Tater Ridge Scottish Ale, brewed with the Asheville Brewers Alliance, from Asheville, NC

Sierra Yonder Bock Tropical Maibock, brewed with Cigar City Brewing out of Tampa, FL

Sierra There and Back English-style Bitter, brewed with New Glarus Brewing in New Glarus, WI

Sierra Double Latte Coffee Milk Stout, brewed with Ninkasi Brewing Co., from Eugene, OR

Sierra Yvan the Great Belgian Style Blonde, brewed with Russian River Brewing Co, out of Santa Rosa, Ca

Sierra Alt Route Altbier, brewed with Victory Brewing out of Downington, Pa

What’s on Tap this Week @Max’s Oyster Bar

by Brian Mitchell, Beverage Director, Max Restaurant Group

One of our favorite local brewers produces this tasty beer on occasion and only in limited quantities, especially on draft.  This week, though, at Max’s Oyster Bar we will be placing the New England Brewing Company Weiss Trash Culture on line (you should expect it to start either Tuesday or Wednesday).

NEBCO-weiss-trash

Produced at NEBCO, in Woodbridge, Ct., this is a great example of a weiss style beer, which is closest to what is known as a Berliner Weiss.  The name though is a play on words and also refers to the specialty yeast that is used to make this style of beer, which are known as White beers. “Weiss” refers to the yeast strain as well as the cloudy effect the beers often have from both yeast and wheat which is the main grain for production.

Extremely refreshing and crisp, the Berliner Weiss beers are often dosed with a little sweet syrup, such as raspberry, to soften them.  These are perfect to enjoy on their own when the weather is a bit warmer (such as it will be this week), as they are crisp and light.  A characteristic which also makes them a perfect draft to have at Max’s Oyster Bar with some fresh seafood dishes, including Oysters and the raw bar, or a lobster special, which will also be running later this week.

The other great thing about this beer is the fact that it is only 3.4% abv, which means you can drink one (or two) and not get as weighed down as from one of the fuller styles of beer.  Perfectly suited to dining and fine cuisine.  Give this a go at Max’s Oyster Bar this week and enjoy one of the best locally produced beers by one of CT’s best brewers – NEBCO.

Newburyport Brewing Co. Dinner at Max Burger Longmeadow

by Brian Mitchell, Corporate Beverage Director, Max Restaurant Group

Newburyport Brewing Company was founded just a couple of years ago (2012), but my first really solid encounter with them was at our Marchtoberfest Beer tasting last March at Max’s Tavern in Springfield.  I had the opportunity to meet the guys from the brewery and taste through the beers.  Without being overly biased, this was one of the best take-aways for me from the whole tasting.  I really enjoyed the style of the beers, the fact that they brew exclusively in cans (large and small), and that they are a couple of local guys.

So, it is with great pleasure that I announce that co-owner Chris Webb, will be joining us at Max Burger in Longmeadow on September 8th, for a great beer dinner, pairing Newburyport Brewing beers with the cuisine of Executive Chef David Sudol.

The price is great – the beer and food are going to be delicious; really no reason not to attend.  Take a look at the menu…

Black Hog Brewing Comes to Max Burger West Hartford

by Brian Mitchell, Beverage Director for Max Restaurant Group

Lat week I had the pleasure of tasting some of the newly released brews from one of the newest breweries to hit the quickly growing CT brewery scene: Black Hog Brewing.  Based in Oxford, Ct, and built on the ashes of a recently defunct brewery, the beers coming from Black Hog are quickly building to be some of the best quality brewed in the state and certainly able to compete with some of the best nationally.

Black Hog

Formed as a partnership between Tom and brother Jason Sobocinski, who own and operate Caseus Fromagerie & Bistro in New Haven, and a family friend Tyler Jones, an experienced brewer, the team has the make-up and back ground for making some truly outstanding beers.  I had the pleasure to taste four beers, which will be released later this week to limited state-wide distribution, and was really impressed with the overall quality.  We also featured the Ginga Ninja as one of the featured beers in last week’s Chef to Farm dinners at Farmer’s Cow in Lebanon, Ct.  Very well received by all.

We will be featuring all four beers this coming Wednesday, July 23rd, at Max Burger in West Hartford as part of local mini-tap-take-over.  As an added bonus, you will get a chance to meet brewer Tyler Jones who will be on hand, drinking and talking beer with any and all.  Brewery folks will be on hand starting at about 5pm; Black Hog beers available until they are gone.

Here is a list of what was tasted and what will be featured at Max Burger;

Ginga Ninja – a red india pale ale brewed w. fresh ginger; 6.5% abv

Easy Rye’Da – an easy drinkin’ low abv rye india pale ale; 4.7% abv

Granola Brown – brown ale brewed w. a granola mix of oatmeal, grains, hops & roasted malts; 5.5% abv

S.W.A.G. – summer wheat ale brewed w. grapefruit peel; 4.3% abv

Back East Palate Mallet Tapping @ Max Burger CT, Oyster Bar and Trumbull Kitchen

by Brian Mitchell, Corporate Beverage Director, Max Restaurant Group

backeast_PalateMallet_18x24 posterPREPIn addition to our regularly scheduled promotion this Thursty Thursday March 12, 2014, Max Burger and Max’s Oyster Bar in West Hartford and Trumbull Kitchen in Hartford, will be participating in a CT State-wide tapping of the newest beer from Back East Brewery, called Palate Mallet American Double India Pale Ale. This is the newest beer from Back East Brewery and is designed to show off what CT brewers can do.

According to Tony Karlowicz, owner of Back East Brewing, the beer is brewed using four types of West Coast hops (specific varieties are being withheld as proprietary secrets), each used to focus the flavor impact on aromatics rather than bitterness.  These hops will help push the citrus grapefruit notes, and as the brew is double dry-hopped it will further emphasize this aspect.

Brewed to 8.6% abv, it is a big style, but not over-done with alcohol.  Drinkable and balanced is the word.  We will have to wait and see exactly how it tastes tomorrow night at 5p, as this is the official debut of this beer.  It will only be available at this point at the listed locations and while supplies are available.  The tentative plan is to get feedback from this release and probably brew the next batch in late April for a canned summer release.  We will see, but since the others brews from Back East have all been very favorably received by our guests, I can only imagine that this will become a regular item for Back East.

Thursty Thursdays @ Max (May 2014)

Thursty_Thursdays_logo_II

By Brian Mitchell, Max Restaurant Group Corporate Beverage Director

Updated June 1, 2014

June marks the fifth month of features for the Max Restaurant Group’s Thursty Thursday promotions, and as usual we are changing things up for the month. Whether you are winding down your week or getting your weekend kicked-off, this is a great opportunity to discover the fabulous sections of beers, wine, and cocktails at each of our locations.  Thursty Thursdays @ Max, just another great reason to join us.

Here is brief description of some of the promotion we are featuring throughout the month of May…

CooperNegroni-2Max A Mia in Avon will be making use of its patio this month and featuring happy hour on the patio (as seating permits).  We will have the classic Italian Negronis available for $5 (regularly $9), plus peach white or red wine sangria for $5, as well.  AS one final addition we will also have $3 Back East Amber Ale pints available for Happy Hour.  Max A Mia has also introduced a brand new Happy Hour menu for the month starting this week, so there is a lot going for Thursty Thursdays in June.

and Max Amore in Glastonbury, will each be going with what has become a fan favorite promotion for Thursty Thursdays, the 1/2-priced bottled wine offer.  Come into Max a Mia or Max Amore on Thursdays, and enjoy a selection from our bottled wine list at 1/2 the normal price.  Such a great value – with over 80 wines to choose from, you can have your pick from Italy, California and beyond. Chef Dave Stickney and the Max A Mia crew always have great choices on the menu, and ½-priced wines are just another reason to pay us a visit.  As always the discount applies to bottled wine selections, only.

As a side note – Max A Mia will be closing this Thursday May 1, for a private party.  1/2 priced wines will be available during the day and we will be back to normal schedule for the next Thursday promo.

mint-julep

Max’s Tavern in Springfield is getting an early start to the Kentucky Derby this weekend by offering a special Pear Julep for Thursty Thursday drinking.  Made with Four Roses Bourbon, this is slight twist on a classic southern cocktail featuring fresh mint, some pear flavoring and of course the Bourbon.  Sweet and smooth, plus refreshing and so easy to drink.  Come in and try one of our Spring favorites – the Pear Julep.

Max’s Oyster Bar in West Hartford will also be starting off its Derby Weekend early and offering $5 Russel’s Reserve Mint Juleps for Thursty Thursday, this week.  A classic Mint Julep is great and it is even better when paired with a 1/2 pound of fresh Louisiana Crawfish.  Thursty Thursday for May 1 is a minty julep and crawfish, all for $10.  Your inner Bubba loves it!

As a preview to CT Craft Beer Week (May 11-18th) Max’s Oyster Bar will be running a (TBD) selection of CT only beers at $5 for Thursty Thursday, May 15.  Plan ahead…

Max Fish in Glastonbury will be continuing the tropical drinking season by featuring more Tiki on Thursdays all month.  We love rum filled drinks and as such we will be featuring a few at great prices on Thursdays, all featuring the most popular selling rum in the world (yes I said bestselling rum in the world) Tanduay, which is made in the Philippines and sells in huge volumes all around the Pacific.  Now available in the US for the past few years, it is starting to gain great traction and is a perfect accompaniment to our Tiki drinks…

Tiki Bar

$5 Tiki Torch … a lovely fruit driven style of a cocktail featuring Tanduay Rum, passion fruit, and a splash of cranberry

$6 The Tremont. Think complex Rum Manhattan style cocktail…Tanduay Rum, Meletti amaro, Cinzano, and a dash of orange bitters

$7 Max’s Classic Painkiller. One of my favorite drinks – lovely coconut, orange juice and pineapple flavors mix with the barrel-aged Tanduay Rum flavors for a very drinkable drink that will make anyone more comfortable

$8 Palm Beach Hurricane – a real Tiki throwback, the Hurricane in this case is throwing a nod to our 10th newest location (The Cooper) which opens this month in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  Tanduay rum, Caruba dark rum, oj, pineapple, grenadine – yum!

Max Downtown of Hartford will be offering three options for its Thursty Thursday line-up in June…

1)  Meiomi Chardonnay for $10 a glass, the newest addition to the Wagner family’s

thumb_blue-point-mosaic-session-ipavarious productions.

2) Chef Hunter Morton’s’s Prosciutto and Pimiento grilled

cheese sandwich served with a Bluepoint Mosaic “Session” IPA for $8.00 (you get both for $8)

3) Or you could pick the Max Manhattan served on a “rock” for juts $5.

Anyway you look at it – three great offering at tremendous value from Max Downtown.

Max Burger in West Hartford will continue to offer 1/2-Priced Cans for Thursty Thursdays @ Max in May.  C’mon in and take your pick of any of our canned brews and get them at a 50% discount, all day and all night.  The canned beer has made a huge return among craft brewers over the past few years as many people have discovered that fresh beer really does taste better this way.  One of the most damaging things for beer is light and the can provides the perfect vehicle for getting all the flavor the brew master intended to your glass (or just from the can).  We agree and we also like the fact that this is a lighter and more eco-friendly way to transport beer.  We have a growing selection of great canned brews from across America, so join us each Thursday in May to taste your way around the canned section.Canned Beer

Guinness ShakeTrumbull Kitchen in Hartford will be featuring a few fan favorites on menu selection for Thursty Thursday this May 1.  Keeping it simple, Trumbull Kitchen will be featuring a Guinness Cheddar Burger for $5 or House-smoked wings for $.50 each, plus we will be rolling out Bar Manager Steve Temple’s famous Guinness Milkshakes for $5 (regularly $9), as well.  Get a shake and Burger or wings for a great Thursty Thursday kick-off.

Guinness Cheddar Burger – All natural beef, stout onions, kettle chips $5

 or

House Smoked BBQ Wings – Great hill blue cheese dip, celery sticks .50 per piece

Spencerbottleglass-640x1029_cThis week Max Burger in Longmeadow, Ma, will be doing a 5pm tapping of the rare an lovely Spencer Trappist Ale, brewed at our one and only local Trappist Brewery in Spencer, Ma. (Keep in mind, there are only 9 Trappist Breweries in the entire world, and we are lucky ducks having one virtually in our back yard.  We are even luckier because they allow us an allocation every so often of their glorious beer.  Starting at 5pm, until it is gone – Spencer Trappist Ale, on draft at Max Burger Longmeadow.

Relic Brewing Celebrates 2nd Anniversary with Tap Take-Over @ Max Burger WH

relic masthead

Max Burger is very pleased to be a part of Relic Brewing Co’s second anniversary celebrations with our friend Mark Sigman.  Mark has been producing some great beers over the past few years from his small but growing brewery in Plainville, Ct.  Max Burger in West Hartford will be turning over out tap lines on Wednesday February 19th to some of the stylish brews from Relic.  This is a rare occasion to have so many of the brewery’s beers on at one time as the production is generally fairly small and limited and the demand is quite high.  We are pretty excited and think you should be as well.

Congratulations to Mark for hitting the two year milestone, for having the vision (and guts) to start a new brewery-business, and for making some killer beers that we have had the pleasure to enjoy these past couple of years!  We look forward to pouring many more in the future.

Here is a list of the brews we are expecting in…

Queen Annes Revenge Porter – robust porter brewed to a traditional 1800 recipe, strong notes of coffee and chocolate tremendous aroma 7% abv

The Huntsman Oatmeal Stout – rich, chocolaty and roasty stout 5.8% abv

Ryepocolypse Stout – Our Anniversary Beer – 9.4% Belgian Rye Stout, roasty, boozy, complex, spicy, dark fruit flavors.

Clockwork Pale Ale – 5.2% abv, American Pale Ale, tropical citrus flavors and aromas on top of malty backbone.
